Uncle Agony #7-I'm Old and Lonely

"Uncle Agony" is a new segment where residents can email us their concerns and troubles. We will answer all your queries and hope that the issue, can be resolved in a peaceful and amicable manner. Of course, the information we provide are mere suggestions from our team and do not represent any official institutions or anyone. In this way, we hope Queenstown residents can "breathe a little easier...

During one of our interviews for "Love @ MyQueenstown," We saw an 66 year old elderly lady living alone in Stirling View. Her husband has passed away several years ago and her 2 children have moved out after their marriages. They visit her once every 2 to 3 months. While she has sufficient "pocket money" for her marketing and daily expenses, she does not go to RCs or CCs activities because they are too "exclusive" for her. She stays home and often feel lonely. She commented in Mandarin, "Life is too boring and I'm counting my days."

MyQueenstown's reply:

Being old is not a crime. In a vibrant society, space has always been a premium. As we work towards achieving global city status, there are groups of people such as the elderly are being marginalised because they feel that they are being "relegated to inferior positions in a society that values "productive contribution."

The state's position on the care of older persons is very explicit where "it is better for families to look after the aged rather than putting them into old folks' home..." The changing values of the young meant that elderly who are unable to afford professional care have to depend of their family and community.

In Queenstown, elderly who needs support and friends can consider visit Lions Befrienders Service Association, who conduct Befriending and Outreach Programme. These programmes provide care and support to seniors residing at Blk 150, Mei Ling Street #01-53 Contact: 6471 7503. This organisation aims to aid in the social, psycho-emotional and physical well-being of lonely seniors through community participation.

It is sad to see that many of the elderly around us feel the same too. Lonely, and 'counting their days' are the comments they made all the time.

That's the reason why I feel that small events such as CLAP! are very meaningful, in an elderly community like ours. In fact, I'm very appreciate that there are events organised for the elderly around us.
