"Uncle Agony" is a new segment where residents can email us their concerns and troubles. We will answer all your queries and hope that the issue, can be resolved in a peaceful and amicable manner. Of course, the information we provide are mere suggestions from our team and do not represent any official institutions or anyone. In this way, we hope Queenstown residents can "breathe a little easier...

Hi MyQueenstown, I stay in Blk 23A, Queens' Close. I have an inconsiderate neighbour living in XXX floor who uses a metallic pole and hit repeatedly onto the floor late in the night. I know who's the culprit and we have called the police and HDB numerous times but they could not warn him/her because they do not have concrete evidences. The sonorous sound is unbearable and my family cannot sleep in peace at night. Please help us!

MyQueenstown replies: Our Team understands the pain of enduring those irritating sounds which affect your lifestyle greatly. On one hand, punishment meted out by the police can serve as a deterrence against offenders. On the other hand, good neighbourly relationships are crucial to weed out these continuous issues.

There are many reasons why this "inconsiderate neighbour" makes so much noise at night. Firstly, he or she may be night owl who returns home late. Secondly, this fellow may live alone and wants to "attract attention." Thirdly, this neighbour may be simply insensitive. And of course, lastly, he is ill. The latter aside, the first three problems can be solved by having good neighbourly relationships.

Unlike kampung communities, many of the HDB dwellers today are not inclined or "can be bothered" to understand our neighbours well. Besides simply salutation, we hardly know or express concern for those who live near us. By knowing them well, it is much easier for us to tell them frankly (and much easier for these noisy mongers to listen) about the noise they make at night. If such "sonorous noises" are unbearable and affect your family greatly, it is time for you to discuss with your "noisy neighbour" and solve this problem amicably. That's certainly the most appropriate solution.
