Freezeeee! Dessert Paradise!

By my queenstown on Thursday, August 19, 2010 with 1 comment

The weather is getting hotter in the past week. Walking a short distance under the merciless sun make us sweat and pant. Hence, it will be great if we can have a bowl of cheng ting or ice kacang.

Ice Kacang or red bean ice in English is a traditional dessert served in Malaysia and Singapore. Made of shaved ice served with sweet flavour syrup that comes in bright colours, attap chee, agar agar cubes and sweet corn, the ice kacang and cheng ting served in Shun Xing Hot and Cold Dessert 顺兴清甜五味汤 (Tanglin Halt Hawker Centre) must be one of the best around.

Mdm Tan, in her 50s, is the owner of the popular dessert stall and a resident in Tanglin Halt. Together with her husband, they have "sweeten" the taste buds of Tanglin Halt residents for more than 47 years. A former itinerant hawker, she recalled the days where her husband and her would run frantically when they heard high pitch whistling sounds from the policemen. She was glad to have raised her 4 children healthily.

Business is brisk at the stall. When MyQueenstown Team visits Mdm Tan in the morning, snaking queues are spotted outside the dessert stall. It gets no better in the afternoon! From the customers, we understood that many customers prefer cheng ting, ice kacang and tau suan. We have to wait for more than 20 minutes before our turn! After trying the tasty and affordable dessert, we have one word to say: Fabulous!
