Hi MyQueenstown Team, I am a divorcee with an elderly mother and 2 school going sons, aged 16 and 13. As a single parent, I am currently working in a travel agency to support my family. My elderly mom fell down recently and had problems moving around. Initially, I intend to employ a maid to take care of my mom. Subsequently, I was put off with this idea because my mom is unable to communicate with the maid. I am looking for a day care centre. Please Help. -Mdm Cecilia Lim, Strathmore.
MyQueenstown replies: Your mom will be delighted to know that her daughter is willing to take care of her despite her temporary handicap. Gaining family support when the going gets tough is important.
Finding a daycare centre in Queenstown can be quite difficult. However, residents who face similar problem like Mdm Lim, may consider engaging Queenstown Multi-Service Centre, located at 150A, Mei Chin Road. It is a stone's throw from the MRT Station.

During one of the visits to residents at Stirling View for Love@MyQueenstown, an Indian family was perturbed by the cluttering of rubbish and flower pots outside her flat. Despite constant reminders and complaints to the HDB Branch (Queenstown), her neighbour remained unfazed. She's afraid that these flower pots will become fire hazard.
MyQueenstown's Reply: Residents and Friends of Queenstown must remember that it takes a collective effort from everyone to make our living environment better. One such selfish resident may cause unnecessary worries for their neighbours. We live together under one roof =)

Ms Tan, a Childcare teacher who lives in Tanglin Halt exclaimed, "I've waited 40 minutes for Bus Service 61!"
Stephanie Loh, a Strathmore resident commented, "Bus Service 32 Take Years to Arrive!"
MyQueenstown's Reply: For residents and friends of Queenstown who took public buses to work places or school, it is inevitable that at times, the waiting time for some buses, particularly the SMRT bus services, can be atrociously long.
In May 2007, Singtel and SBS Transit launched Iris NextBus service to notify commuters on the arrival time of the next bus. Commuters can SMS:
(Bus Stop Number) space (Service Number) to 74744
A return message will inform the commuter when the next bus as well as the subsequent bus will arrive. Residents will walk to the front of the bus stop to look at the bus stop number.
While SMRT did not launch such service yet, residents may consider the above option while taking SBS Transit bus services.

In an interview with one of the residents for our Love @ MyQueenstown programme, a forty-five year old married woman living in Blk 165, Stirling Road revealed that her husband has been touchy since he has visited Casino. She understood that her husband will visit the Casino once every week and believed that he had lost money there. Her husband would get drunk and return home in the wee hours and hit her 11-year old son. She is worried for her son.
MyQueenstown's reply: Domestic violence can be defined as a pattern of abusive behaviours by one party in the forms of physical aggression, threats, emotional or sexual abuse. Physical abuse is common in a malfunction family unit.
Family is viewed as a haven from the world, supplying absolute fulfillment to each individual by encourage love and trust among individuals to escape the competition of dehumanizing force in society. During one of our interviews for "Love @ MyQueenstown," We saw an 66 year old elderly lady living alone in Stirling View. Her husband has passed away several years ago and her 2 children have moved out after their marriages. They visit her once every 2 to 3 months. While she has sufficient "pocket money" for her marketing and daily expenses, she does not go to RCs or CCs activities because they are too "exclusive" for her. She stays home and often feel lonely. She commented in Mandarin, "Life is too boring and I'm counting my days."
Location of Lion Befrienders
MyQueenstown's reply:
Being old is not a crime. In a vibrant society, space has always been a premium. As we work towards achieving global city status, there are groups of people such as the elderly are being marginalised because they feel that they are being "relegated to inferior positions in a society that values "productive contribution."
The state's position on the care of older persons is very explicit where "it is better for families to look after the aged rather than putting them into old folks' home..." The changing values of the young meant that elderly who are unable to afford professional care have to depend of their family and community.
In Queenstown, elderly who needs support and friends can consider visit Lions Befrienders Service Association, who conduct Befriending and Outreach Programme. These programmes provide care and support to seniors residing at Blk 150, Mei Ling Street #01-53 Contact: 6471 7503. This organisation aims to aid in the social, psycho-emotional and physical well-being of lonely seniors through community participation.

Hi MyQueenstown, I stay in Blk 23A, Queens' Close. I have an inconsiderate neighbour living in XXX floor who uses a metallic pole and hit repeatedly onto the floor late in the night. I know who's the culprit and we have called the police and HDB numerous times but they could not warn him/her because they do not have concrete evidences. The sonorous sound is unbearable and my family cannot sleep in peace at night. Please help us!
MyQueenstown replies: Our Team understands the pain of enduring those irritating sounds which affect your lifestyle greatly. On one hand, punishment meted out by the police can serve as a deterrence against offenders. On the other hand, good neighbourly relationships are crucial to weed out these continuous issues.
There are many reasons why this "inconsiderate neighbour" makes so much noise at night. Firstly, he or she may be night owl who returns home late. Secondly, this fellow may live alone and wants to "attract attention." Thirdly, this neighbour may be simply insensitive. And of course, lastly, he is ill. The latter aside, the first three problems can be solved by having good neighbourly relationships.
Unlike kampung communities, many of the HDB dwellers today are not inclined or "can be bothered" to understand our neighbours well. Besides simply salutation, we hardly know or express concern for those who live near us. By knowing them well, it is much easier for us to tell them frankly (and much easier for these noisy mongers to listen) about the noise they make at night. If such "sonorous noises" are unbearable and affect your family greatly, it is time for you to discuss with your "noisy neighbour" and solve this problem amicably. That's certainly the most appropriate solution.
