Farewell MyQueenstown #7 - Farewell KTM Tracks

On 30 Jun 2011 | 6 Comments

Much has been written about KTM Tracks lately. A simple search on Google and Yahoo will bring you to numerous websites such as this and this. After all, this cantankerous relic was Singapore's brave new world in the early 20th century.  I have always been a believer of my secondary school's motto, "Rooted in Tradition, Equipped for the Future."

On 30 Apr 2011 | 1 Comments

Living on the first storey has brought many positive and also negative surprises to her family. MyQueenstown Panorama #5 - Red Lights to Racial Harmony?

A comment from a certain community leader has stirred controversy last month. Whether it is a callous remark from him or a desperate attempt by the largest newspaper publisher to drum up sales, the remark has definitely opened up a can of worms. When this MyQueenstown correspondent walked along the streets interviewing residents for their take on the topic of racial harmony in Queenstown, we are both surprised and comforted. We are surprised because many students and youths in Queenstown converse in English, instead of their mother tongue, with peers from the same racial and language group. We are comforted because our youths are respecting other racial and language groups more. After all, a nation is an imagine community with shares the same language, same culture and same historical experiences.

For the elderly population in Queenstown, it has been a chore scaling flights of stairs home at night every day. The inactivity of an ageing estate means that shops are closed early and streets are relatively empty before 10pm every day. The emerging trend of street violence does not quell residents' concerns on the general safety in the estate, since this group of less agiled residents cannot defend themselves against a more physically imposing group of troublemakers. What makes the streets and alleys safe in Queenstown is vigilance displayed by our fellow residents.  Today, let us find out more about the general sentiments towards safety along the streets in Queenstown at night.

Every morning at 3.30am, Mano, 49, will drive his van to the multipurpose hall in front of Block 28, Tanglin Halt Road. By then, the newspaper distributors from the various publishers would have placed stacks of newspapers neatly at one corner for Mano and his group of foreign workers to arrange them. Different sections of the Straits Times and other newspapers are published in different locations. The Beritan Harian, MyPaper and Tamil Murasu are printed at a factory in Genting Lane; Life (from the Straits Times) at another factory in Penjuru Road; whereas the Classifieds, Home, World (from the Straits Times) and Chinese Dailies are printed at the main publishing factory located at Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim. Hence, it requires newspapers distributors like Rahiman to arrange them together before distributing to every households in Queenstown.

John, 80, was doing some furniture arrangements in his new apartment in Dawson when MyQueenstown team visited. Having moved over to Dawson for only around a month, John still had some unpacking to do and it was nearing the Lunar New Year. MyQueenstown team was surprised by John's generosity in offering us tea and entry into his flat.
John - Former Resident at Blk 27A
Being the first owner of his current Dawson apartment and also his flat in Blk 27A where he moved over from, John was making comparisons between the new and old apartments. He explained that his old flat was cozier and the living room was much larger than his current flat. In addition, as Blk 27A is just next to the Queenstown MRT station, transportation was much more convenient than Dawson estate. However, the down side to living next to the MRT station is of course the noise pollution levels.
